Gas vs. Electric Dryer Repair: What Houston Homeowners Should Know

Gas and electric dryers share most mechanical parts (drum, belt, rollers, thermal fuse) but differ in how they generate heat — electric dryers use a heating element, gas dryers use a burner assembly with an igniter and gas valve. Gas dryer repairs involve an added safety dimension electric dryers don't have.
What's actually different between the two
Strip away the heat source and a gas dryer and an electric dryer are mechanically almost identical: same drum, belt, rollers, blower, moisture sensor, and control board. The difference is entirely in how they produce heat. An electric dryer runs current through a heating element (essentially a large coil, similar to a toaster). A gas dryer ignites natural gas or propane through a burner assembly, using an igniter, flame sensor, and gas valve solenoids to control it safely.
Electric dryer heating failures
When an electric dryer runs but produces no heat, the most common culprits are a burned-out heating element or a blown thermal fuse. The thermal fuse is a one-time safety device that trips if the dryer overheats — often because a clogged vent restricted airflow and let temperatures climb too high. Replacing the element without addressing the vent restriction just sets up the same failure again.
Gas dryer heating failures
Gas dryers fail to heat for a different, more varied set of reasons: a weak or dirty igniter that can't get hot enough to light the burner, a faulty flame sensor that shuts off gas flow as a safety measure, or a stuck gas valve solenoid. Because gas is involved, these repairs require someone comfortable working safely around a gas line — this is not a place to guess.
The safety dimension unique to gas dryers
If a gas dryer smells like gas, clicks repeatedly without igniting, or produces a scorched smell, stop using it immediately. Unlike an electric dryer's electrical fault (which is contained), a gas dryer issue can involve an actual gas leak or incomplete combustion, both of which need to be inspected before the dryer runs again. If you smell gas specifically, shut off the gas supply valve and ventilate the area before calling anyone, including us.
Which one costs more to repair?
It varies by the specific failure, but gas dryer heating-system repairs (igniter, valve coils, flame sensor) often run comparable to or slightly above electric heating-element replacement, mostly due to the added inspection and safety verification involved.
